Credit Union Youth Week Designed To Teach Children Social Responsibility
La Habra, Calif., May 19th, 2008—American First Credit Union recently participated in a nationwide credit union effort to teach children the importance of financial and social responsibility during National Credit Union Youth Week, April 20-26th, 2008. During National Credit Union Youth Week, credit unions around the country took the opportunity to stress the importance of financial education and enlighten children and parents alike about the cooperative spirit and benefits of credit union membership.
As part of its participation in Youth Week, themed “Got Green”, American First hosted an essay contest for children to express what they would do to help the environment if they were the President of the United States. The 12 year old essay contest winner won an MP3 player. Children also entered their drawings about saving money into a coloring contest, and three children ages 6, 8 and 11 won movie and restaurant gift certificates for their entries. In addition, each American First branch celebrated Youth Week with a variety of food and activities designed specifically for children.
To reinforce its own commitment to social responsibility, American First purchased 168 trees representing each new account opened and deposit of $20 or more to a youth account made by members during Youth Week. The trees will be planted in areas affected by recent California wild fires.
“It is our hope that American First’s efforts during National Credit Union Youth Week helped to raise awareness about the importance of educating young people about social and financial responsibility and the benefits of credit union membership,” said Bob Street, American First President/CEO.
